I remember those days when I used to follow any and everybody on social media. I’d stroll through stories upon stories on my timeline only to end up angry that I had wasted my time, because I didn’t learn anything from them. This went on for a while until I learnt the importance of controlling who and what I let in my circle. I realized that those things I was looking at, and reading while strolling up and down my timeline were actually having an influence on me in a way.

Contrary to what a lot of us think, a person doesn’t have to meet you physically to influence you. With the rise of internet and social media, people can influence you greatly as you consistently follow them, look at their pictures, and read the things they post. Whether that influence is negative or positive, depends a lot on who you choose to follow. This applies not only to social media, but also to music, movies, tv shows, radio, etc. When you listen to music, whether you know this or not, the artist has just spoken into your life. Those lyrics enter your subconscious and you think on them. The same thing happens when you watch a movie, or listen to a radio talk show. The things we see and hear play a great deal in how we think, act, and live. We are a product of our environment.

Decide who you become by making sure your environment is conducive enough to make you become that person. Don’t give just anybody access to your space; you’re way too special for that. Choose who you listen to, watch, and interact with (your circle of friends). They say, “show me your friends and I’ll show you who you are “; that includes social media friends too. Follow people of great moral standards who can teach you a thing or two about life. People who will inspire and motivate you to be great. This is your life, and now is time to make a change. Protect your mind, and guard your heart.
